Only \u003cstrong\u003e40 RS36s\u003c\/strong\u003e were ever built across all owners, making it one of the rarer ALCo road switcher types. The \u003cstrong\u003eNickel Plate Road\u003c\/strong\u003e took delivery of \u003cstrong\u003e11 units numbered 865–875\u003c\/strong\u003e — and within that already small fleet, units \u003cstrong\u003e874 and 875\u003c\/strong\u003e were built to a distinctly different specification than the rest.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile the nine units numbered \u003cstrong\u003e865–873\u003c\/strong\u003e were delivered in the standard low nose, non-dynamic brake configuration (also available from Out of the Box Models), units \u003cstrong\u003e874 and 875\u003c\/strong\u003e were ordered with a \u003cstrong\u003ehigh short hood\u003c\/strong\u003e and equipped with \u003cstrong\u003esteam generators\u003c\/strong\u003e for passenger train heating service — making them the only RS36s in the NKP fleet capable of working passenger trains.
