ALCo RS36 NKP (High Hood)

These are N scale 3D printable files for the ALCo RS36 in Nickel Plate Road markings — the high short hood, steam generator configuration, representing the two unique units 874 and 875. Designed to fit on an Atlas RS11 frame.

The ALCo RS36 was a 1,800 horsepower road switcher produced by the American Locomotive Company between 1962 and 1963, powered by ALCo's 251 series prime mover. Only 40 RS36s were ever built across all owners, making it one of the rarer ALCo road switcher types. The Nickel Plate Road took delivery of 11 units numbered 865–875 — and within that already small fleet, units 874 and 875 were built to a distinctly different specification than the rest.

While the nine units numbered 865–873 were delivered in the standard low nose, non-dynamic brake configuration (also available from Out of the Box Models), units 874 and 875 were ordered with a high short hood and equipped with steam generators for passenger train heating service — making them the only RS36s in the NKP fleet capable of working passenger trains. This combination of high hood and steam generator equipment made 874 and 875 visually and operationally distinct from their low-nose sisters, and as just two locomotives out of a total RS36 production run of only 40, they represent one of the most specific and rare prototype subjects in the entire ALCo diesel catalog.

When the Nickel Plate Road was merged into the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1964, all 11 RS36s were renumbered into the N&W roster as 2865–2875 — with 874 and 875 becoming 2874 and 2875 — where they continued in service under their new owner.
