Introducing the full consist of the 1936 Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Denver Zephyr! These are N scale 3D printable files for the complete as-delivered train: a twin-unit EMC “Shovel Nose” power car and ten Budd-built cars, 12 units in all. The power car is designed to fit on a Tomytec TM-10. Each car includes a printed interior, underframe and trucks. These parts are not shown in the product images, which show the car bodies only. All you’ll need to add are couplers and wheels. Decals are included for both trainsets, so your consist can be finished as either the Silver King or the Silver Knight train.

The Denver Zephyr was the Burlington’s answer to the success of the 1934 Pioneer Zephyr: a full-service, overnight streamliner between Chicago and Denver. Built by the Budd Company in shot-welded stainless steel, the two semi-articulated trainsets were the first Zephyrs to carry sleeping cars. Groups of cars shared trucks between them, which you’ll see modeled in the articulated sets below. On October 23, 1936, one of the new trains made a nonstop Chicago-to-Denver run to challenge the Pioneer Zephyr’s record. The Denver Zephyr entered regular service on November 8, 1936.

The consist, with both trainsets’ names:

  • 9906A Silver King / 9907A Silver Knight: EMC Shovel Nose cab unit
  • 9906B Silver Queen / 9907B Silver Princess: EMC Shovel Nose booster unit
  • 950 Silver Courier / 951 Silver Herald: Auxiliary power, Railway Post Office and baggage car
  • 980 Silver Lining / 981 Silver Bar: Baggage, crew dormitory, buffet and lounge car
  • Articulated set 1:
    • 4631 Silver City / 4633 Silver Spruce: 64-seat chair car
    • 4632 Silver Lake / 4634 Silver Plume: 38-seat chair car
    • 152 Silver Grill / 153 Silver Service: 40-seat dining car
  • Articulated set 2:
    • 410 Silver State / 413 Silver Skates: 12-section sleeper
    • 411 Silver Tip / 414 Silver Screen: 12-section sleeper

The original Denver Zephyrs held the Chicago–Denver run for twenty years. When the Burlington re-equipped the train with Vista-Domes, the 1936 sets moved to Colorado & Southern service as the Texas Zephyr, where they ran until 1965.

The included decal sheet has BURLINGTON letterboard lettering for every unit, the Burlington Route nose herald, and car names for both trainsets.

Looking for the train as it ran after its expansion? The 1942 Denver Zephyr adds the coach-dinette and all-room sleeper that joined the consist in 1938–39, and is also available from Out of the Box Models. The shovel nose power cars are also sold on their own.
