These are N scale 3D printable files for the 40' Mt. Vernon Aluminum Boxcar, a distinctive and relatively rare freight car type built by Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Company in 1945 for a small group of Midwestern railroads. All variants feature accurate 14-panel riveted sides and 3/3/4 Dreadnaught ends, with road-specific door variations as noted below. Available in five decal variants: Alton, GM&O, M&StL, RI (Unpainted), and RI (Painted).
The Mt. Vernon aluminum boxcar was an unusual and forward-looking design for its era. Built in 1945 as wartime aluminum restrictions were lifting, these cars used aluminum construction in place of the conventional steel that dominated American freight car building — offering a lighter carbody that reduced tare weight and improved payload efficiency. The 14-panel riveted sides and 3/3/4 Dreadnaught ends are faithfully reproduced across all variants, with the door type varying by railroad order as delivered:
- Alton — the Alton Railroad, numbered 1200–1209. Features 7-panel Superior doors.
- GM&O — the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad, numbered 6000–6009. Features 7-panel Superior doors.
- M&StL — the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway, numbered 1000–1018. Features Youngstown doors.
- RI (Unpainted) — the Rock Island Railroad, numbered 20060–20069, in the natural unpainted aluminum finish. Features Youngstown doors.
- RI (Painted) — the same Rock Island cars in Rock Island's painted express boxcar livery. Features Youngstown doors.
