ALCo RS32 CNW

These are N scale 3D printable files for the American Locomotive Company (ALCo) RS32 in Chicago & North Western Railway markings — non-dynamic brake version, specifically modeled for CNW No. 4243. Designed to fit on an Atlas RS11 frame.

The RS32 was produced by ALCo between 1961 and 1962, with only 35 units built in total across just two original buyers — 10 for the Southern Pacific and 25 for the New York Central. The Chicago & North Western was not among the original purchasers; instead, the CNW acquired 11 RS32s secondhand from the Penn Central — the successor railroad formed by the 1968 merger of the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroad. This secondhand acquisition places the CNW's RS32s in a historically fascinating context: locomotives originally built for the NYC, absorbed into the Penn Central's vast and troubled roster, and then sold off to find a second career on the CNW's Midwestern network.

The non-dynamic brake configuration of this model reflects the CNW's operational environment — unlike the Southern Pacific's RS32s, which required dynamic brakes for the steep mountain grades of the Sierra Nevada and Siskiyou Mountains, the CNW operated primarily over the relatively flat terrain of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas, where dynamic braking was far less critical. The former NYC units, originally built without dynamic brakes for the Central's own relatively level main lines, were therefore well-suited to CNW service without modification.

With 11 units, the CNW ultimately rostered nearly half of the entire NYC-built RS32 fleet — making the railroad one of the most significant operators of this rare type in its later years. In CNW yellow and green, these former Penn Central locomotives became part of one of the most recognizable fleets in Midwestern railroading.
