These are N scale 3D printable files for the American Locomotive Company (ALCo) RS32 in Southern Pacific Railroad markings — dynamic brake version. Designed to fit on an Atlas RS11 frame. Includes SP decals.
The RS32 was produced by ALCo between 1961 and 1962 as a high-horsepower road switcher powered by the ALCo 12-251B prime mover producing 2,000 horsepower — a significant output for a B-B locomotive of the era. The RS32 was ALCo's answer to EMD's GP20 and GP30, aimed at railroads that wanted more power than a standard road switcher without stepping up to a six-axle locomotive. Only 35 units were built in total across just two railroads — 10 for the Southern Pacific and 25 for the New York Central — making the RS32 one of the rarest ALCo road switcher types and a subject almost entirely absent from the commercial N scale market. The SP's 10 units represent more than a quarter of the entire RS32 production run.
The Southern Pacific was one of ALCo's most loyal customers, operating a substantial fleet of ALCo road switchers across its vast system stretching from Portland and San Francisco to New Orleans and El Paso. The SP's RS32s worked freight and local service across the railroad's California and Oregon territories, wearing the classic Daylight Red and Orange or Black Widow freight schemes that made Southern Pacific locomotives among the most visually striking on the West Coast. The dynamic brake variant modeled here was essential for SP operations over the steep grades of the Siskiyou Mountains, the Tehachapi Loop, and the Sierra Nevada, where controlling heavy trains on long descents demanded reliable dynamic braking capability.
ALCo's RS32 represents the final flowering of ALCo's road switcher development before the company's decline in the face of EMD and GE competition — a rare and historically significant locomotive type in one of American railroading's most beloved paint schemes.
