The KC-135Q was a specialized tanker variant configured exclusively to carry and offload JP-7 fuel — the exotic, low-volatility fuel required by the SR-71 Blackbird's Pratt & Whitney J58 engines. While outwardly similar to the standard KC-135A, the Q-model featured dedicated JP-7 tankage and plumbing, making it an indispensable support aircraft for the SR-71 reconnaissance mission.
