The X-37B is the world's only operational reusable robotic spaceplane, launched atop an Atlas V or Falcon 9 rocket and returning to Earth as an autonomous runway landing — a direct descendant of the Space Shuttle concept scaled down to an unmanned, highly classified platform. Built by Boeing's Phantom Works division, the X-37B has conducted multiple long-duration orbital missions, with some flights lasting over 900 days in orbit. What exactly it does up there remains classified, but its payload bay, maneuvering capability, and extended endurance make it one of the most capable and mysterious spacecraft ever operated.

The 5th Space Operations Squadron, based at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, is the USSF unit responsible for operating the X-37B program. The vehicle's distinctive finish — white, gray, and black heat tiles across the airframe, with minimal markings beyond USAF/USSF titling and the Boeing logo — reflects its functional design as a reentry vehicle built to survive the thermal extremes of orbital return.
