These are 1/72 scale decals for the Boeing YAL-1A Airborne Laser 00-0001, operated jointly by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), and Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), United States Air Force.
The YAL-1A was one of the most ambitious and futuristic weapons programs in American military history. Based on a heavily modified Boeing 747-400F airframe, it housed a megawatt-class Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) designed to detect, track, and destroy ballistic missiles during their vulnerable boost phase — within seconds of launch, before they could deploy decoys or maneuvering warheads.
Managed by the Missile Defense Agency and tested by the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, the YAL-1A successfully destroyed a ballistic missile target in flight in February 2010 — a historic first. Despite this achievement, the program was cancelled in 2011 due to cost and operational limitations, leaving the sole prototype as a remarkable testament to the cutting edge of directed-energy weapons research.
The YAL-1A remains one of the most visually distinctive and technically extraordinary aircraft ever built — a must-have subject for any collection focused on experimental or advanced technology aircraft.
