These are N scale 3D printable files for the Bombardier Comet II Cab Car — the push-pull control car that became a defining piece of equipment on the Northeast's busiest commuter rail corridors. Available in MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) and MNCR (Metro-North Commuter Railroad) markings.

The Comet series of bi-level commuter coaches was developed in the early 1960s by the Pullman-Standard Company for New Jersey commuter service, and the design proved so successful that it was adopted and evolved by transit agencies across the Northeast over the following decades. The Comet II was a refined second-generation version of the design, built by Bombardier in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the Northeast's commuter rail agencies modernized their aging fleets. The Cab Car variant is the control car used in push-pull operation — allowing a locomotive to push the train from the rear while the engineer controls the consist from the cab car at the front, eliminating the need to run the locomotive around the train at terminal stations and dramatically improving operational efficiency on busy urban commuter lines.

The two agencies represented in this set operated the Comet II on some of the most heavily traveled commuter rail corridors in North America:

  • MBTA — Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority: Boston's regional transit authority operated Comet II equipment on its commuter rail network radiating out from South Station and North Station into the suburbs of eastern Massachusetts. The MBTA's Comet IIs wore the agency's distinctive red and silver livery, a familiar sight to generations of Boston-area commuters.
  • MNCR — Metro-North Commuter Railroad: Created in 1983 when New York State took over the former Penn Central and Conrail commuter operations, Metro-North became one of the busiest commuter railroads in North America almost overnight. Its Comet II cab cars worked the New Haven Line, Harlem Line, and Hudson Line out of Grand Central Terminal, wearing Metro-North's clean blue and silver livery that became synonymous with New York suburban rail travel.
