Budd Big Dome (AC Units) – Former ATSF

These are N scale 3D printable files for the Budd Big Dome as modified with roof-mounted air conditioning units — a former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) Big Dome car that went on to a second career in scenic tourist railroad service after its original Santa Fe assignment, operated by the Cañon City & Royal Gorge Railroad (CRRX).

The Budd Big Dome was built by the Budd Company for the Santa Fe Railway as one of the three great full-length dome car designs of the postwar streamliner era — alongside the Milwaukee Road's Super Dome and the Great Northern's Great Dome. The Santa Fe's Big Domes served on the railroad's premier transcontinental passenger trains including the El Capitan and Super Chief corridor between Chicago and Los Angeles, providing passengers with panoramic views of the American Southwest. After their Santa Fe service, the cars were acquired by subsequent operators and modified for tourist and scenic railroad use — most notably by adding roof-mounted air conditioning units, a practical necessity for operations in warmer climates that gives these cars their immediately distinctive modified appearance compared to the as-built Big Dome profile.

As operated by the Cañon City & Royal Gorge Railroad (CRRX) in Colorado, the former ATSF Big Dome provided spectacular elevated dome viewing of the dramatic Royal Gorge canyon scenery along the Arkansas River — one of the most scenic railroad routes in North America, where the canyon walls rise over 1,000 feet above the river. The full-length dome made it an ideal car for this assignment, offering passengers an unobstructed panoramic view of the gorge that no conventional passenger car could match.
