These are N scale 3D printable files for the Budd Great Dome in its original as-built configuration — the Great Northern Railway (GN) Great Dome as delivered, without the later modifications seen in the companion theater car and AC-unit versions. Available in six decal variants spanning the full ownership history of these cars in their as-built body configuration: GN 1390–1394 (Orange and Green), GN 1390–1394 (Big Sky Blue), GN 1391 (Cascade Green), BN 1395 (Cascade Green), SLRG 1394, and AMTK Phase I.
The Budd Great Dome was built by the Budd Company for the Great Northern Railway as one of the three great full-length dome car designs of the postwar streamliner era — alongside the Milwaukee Road's Super Dome and the Santa Fe's Big Dome. The Great Northern's Great Domes, numbered 1390–1394, served on the flagship Empire Builder between Chicago and Seattle/Portland, providing passengers with panoramic views of Glacier National Park and the Cascade Mountains on one of the most scenically spectacular passenger train routes in North America. After their Great Northern service, the cars dispersed to a variety of subsequent operators, making the Great Dome one of the most widely traveled full-length dome car types in American railroad history.
The six decal variants trace the Great Dome through its complete ownership history in the as-built body configuration:
- GN 1390–1394 (Orange and Green) — the cars in the Great Northern's iconic Orange and Green Empire Builder livery — Omaha Orange and Pullman Green with gold lettering — one of the most celebrated and visually striking passenger train color schemes in American railroad history.
- GN 1390–1394 (Big Sky Blue) — the cars in the Great Northern's Big Sky Blue livery, the updated color scheme introduced in the 1960s that replaced the Orange and Green on the Empire Builder in the final years of Great Northern passenger service, featuring the Rocky the Mountain Goat herald prominently on the carbody.
- GN 1391 (Cascade Green) — GN #1391 in an experimental Cascade Green livery, representing a one-off paint scheme applied to a single car as a trial during the Great Northern era.
- BN 1395 (Cascade Green) — the car as operated by Burlington Northern Railroad, renumbered 1395, in BN's signature Cascade Green livery following the 1970 GN→BN merger.
- SLRG 1394 — San Luis & Rio Grande / Iowa Pacific: the car numbered 1394 as operated by the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG) under Iowa Pacific Holdings on scenic excursion services in Colorado.
- AMTK Phase I — the cars in the AMTK Phase I red, white, and blue livery applied following the 1971 nationalization of intercity passenger rail service in the United States.
