These are N scale 3D printable files for the Budd Great Dome car in its modified, vestibule-door-removed configuration — as rebuilt for service under AMTK (reporting mark) and later the American Orient Express. This model captures the car as it appeared after the side vestibule doors were removed and plated over, a distinctive modification that sets it apart from the original as-built Great Northern configuration.

The Budd Great Dome was one of the most spectacular passenger cars ever built in North America. Introduced in 1955 for the Great Northern Railway's flagship Empire Builder, the Great Dome featured a full-length upper-level glass dome extending nearly the entire length of the car — far larger than the mid-train dome cars offered by other railroads — giving passengers a sweeping, unobstructed panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains, Glacier National Park, and the Pacific Northwest scenery along the Empire Builder's route. Only seven Great Domes were ever built, all for the Great Northern, making them among the rarest and most prized passenger cars in American railroad history.

After the 1970 Burlington Northern merger, the Great Domes passed to BN and subsequently to AMTK, which operated them on long-distance western routes. AMTK's mechanical department removed the original side vestibule doors and plated over the openings — a practical modification that simplified maintenance and reflected the changing operational patterns of the national passenger rail network. It is this modified configuration that this model represents, and which distinguishes it from the original GN as-built version.

The five livery options cover the full arc of the Great Dome's later service life:

  • AMTK Phase III — the classic red, white, and blue Phase III scheme applied to AMTK's long-distance fleet from the late 1970s through the 1980s, one of the most recognized passenger car liveries in American railroad history.
  • AMTK Phase IV — the updated Phase IV livery introduced in the late 1980s, featuring a revised stripe arrangement and updated lettering.
  • AMTK Phase IVb — a further refinement of the Phase IV scheme with subtle but prototypically significant differences in stripe placement and logo application.
  • AMTK Phase III Heritage — the Heritage Fleet variant of the Phase III scheme, applied to cars refurbished for continued long-distance service, combining the classic Phase III colors with updated interior and exterior details.
  • AOE — American Orient Express (New Orleans and Copper Canyon) — after leaving AMTK service, several Great Domes found a second life with the American Orient Express, a luxury excursion train operation that ran premium all-inclusive rail tours across North America in the 1990s and 2000s. The AOE's Great Domes wore a striking dark green and gold livery evoking the golden age of American passenger railroading, and operated on routes including the New Orleans and Copper Canyon itineraries.
