These are N scale 3D printable files for the BNSF Theater Business Car No. 30 — a one-of-a-kind piece of corporate railroad history representing three distinct lives in one remarkable carbody. This car began its existence as a Budd Great Dome built for the Great Northern Railway, was subsequently rebuilt into a Burlington Northern theater business car, and was later updated and re-lettered as a BNSF business car following the 1995 merger that created the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
The Budd Great Dome was one of the most spectacular passenger cars ever built in North America. Introduced in 1955 for the Great Northern's flagship Empire Builder, the Great Dome featured a full-length upper-level glass dome extending nearly the entire length of the car, giving passengers sweeping panoramic views of Glacier National Park, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest. Only seven Great Domes were ever built, all for the Great Northern, making them among the rarest and most prized passenger cars in American railroad history.
After the 1970 Burlington Northern merger absorbed the Great Northern, this car's extraordinary second life began. Rather than retiring the carbody, the Burlington Northern's mechanical department undertook a significant rebuild, converting the former Great Dome into a theater car for the railroad's business car fleet — a rolling screening room and presentation facility used for executive travel, customer entertainment, and corporate events. The Great Dome's vast upper-level glass enclosure, originally designed to showcase mountain scenery to passengers, made it a natural candidate for conversion into a unique entertainment space unlike anything else in any railroad's business car fleet.
Following the 1995 creation of BNSF through the merger of Burlington Northern and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the car was updated and re-lettered into BNSF markings as part of the new railroad's business car fleet, where it continued to serve as a distinctive and historically layered piece of corporate equipment. This late BNSF configuration is what this model represents.
A perfect companion to the Budd Great Dome (GN as-built) also available from Out of the Box Models, allowing you to model the same carbody in its original and final configurations.
