These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago & Western Indiana Railroad Stillwell Coach, representing cars 42–46 — the C&WI's own version of the distinctive Stillwell-style heavyweight passenger coach, used in commuter service on the railroad's lines serving Dearborn Station. Modelers should note that while these cars share the Stillwell design's characteristic tall clerestory roof and large side windows, the C&WI version has a different number of windows than the Erie Railroad's Stillwell coaches — making this a separate and distinct model from the Erie Heavyweight Stillwell Coach also available from Out of the Box Models.
The Stillwell coach design — named for railroad promoter Arthur Stillwell — is characterized by its tall clerestory roof and unusually large side windows, designed to maximize natural light and ventilation in the passenger compartment. The C&WI's adoption of the Stillwell design for its commuter fleet reflected the car's practical advantages for the railroad's short-haul passenger operations, and the five cars numbered 42–46 formed a small but distinctive fleet that was a familiar sight at Dearborn Station for generations of Chicago commuters.
The Chicago & Western Indiana Railroad was the owner of Dearborn Station and the operator of the terminal belt trackage that connected the station's tenant railroads — including the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, the Erie Railroad, the Grand Trunk Western, and others — to their main lines. As both station owner and belt railroad operator, the C&WI was an essential piece of Chicago's passenger railroad infrastructure, and its Stillwell coaches were part of the local commuter operations that ran alongside the long-distance trains of its tenant railroads through Dearborn Station.
A perfect companion to the C&WI Heavyweight Combine Car #40 and the Erie Heavyweight Stillwell Coach, both also available from Out of the Box Models, for modeling the Chicago terminal railroad scene or comparing the Stillwell design across two different railroads.
