Cessna O-1E 56-2612 United States Air Force

These are 1/72 scale decals for Cessna O-1E Bird Dog 56-2612, assigned to the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS), United States Air Force, in the distinctive Vietnam-era camouflage scheme.

The 21st TASS was a forward air control unit flying the O-1E in the demanding and perilous FAC mission over Vietnam — locating enemy forces, marking targets with white phosphorus rockets, and directing strike aircraft onto their objectives at low altitude and low speed, often under intense ground fire.

As the war progressed, O-1Es operating over Vietnam were repainted in camouflage to reduce their visibility against the jungle terrain below. This aircraft wears the classic Southeast Asia scheme of Dark Tan and Medium Green over Camouflage Gray, with the addition of International Orange on the wing upper surfaces — a safety measure to make the aircraft visible to friendly strike aircraft approaching from above while remaining camouflaged from ground observers. It is a beautifully complex and historically accurate finish that captures the O-1E at the height of its Vietnam combat service.
