Cessna TO-1D 57-2774 United States Army

These are 1/72 scale decals for Cessna TO-1D Bird Dog 57-2774, assigned to U.S. Army Alaska, finished overall in striking International Orange.

The TO-1D was the dual-control trainer variant of the L-19D Bird Dog, used to qualify Army pilots in liaison and observation flying. In Alaska, the training mission demanded mastery of extreme cold-weather operations, snow and ice surface landings, arctic navigation, and wilderness survival — some of the most demanding flying conditions faced by any Army aviator.

The all-over International Orange scheme on 57-2774 represents the most visually dramatic of the Alaska Bird Dog high-visibility finishes, making the aircraft unmistakable against the snow, ice, and dark boreal forest of the Alaskan interior. Compared to the gloss white and red TO-1D 55-4736 also from Army Alaska, this aircraft takes the high-visibility concept to its logical extreme — a blazing beacon in the wilderness. Together the two aircraft make a vivid and complementary pair for any Bird Dog collection.
