These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad NE-12 Waycar — the distinctive end-of-train car that was as much a part of the Burlington's identity as its famous Zephyr streamliners. Available in both the classic Silver and Orange liveries.

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad — universally known as the "Q" among railroaders — had its own terminology for the car that most American railroads called a caboose. On the Burlington, it was always a waycar, a name that reflected the railroad's independent character and deep Midwestern roots. The waycar was the rolling home and office of the freight train's rear-end crew — the conductor and brakemen who managed the train from the back, watched for hotboxes and dragging equipment, and handled the paperwork that kept the railroad's freight moving across the prairies and river valleys of the Midwest.

The NE-12 was one of the CB&Q's standard steel waycar designs, built for durability and practicality on the railroad's extensive freight network stretching from Chicago to Denver, Kansas City, and the Pacific Northwest via connections. The two livery options capture different eras of CB&Q waycar history:

  • Silver — the striking aluminum-painted scheme that gave the Burlington's waycars a distinctive, almost streamlined appearance, complementing the railroad's famous silver Zephyr passenger equipment.
  • Orange — the later, more visible safety scheme adopted as railroad safety standards evolved, making the end-of-train car easier to spot from a distance.

The waycar era ended on American railroads in the 1980s when the Federal Railroad Administration allowed the replacement of rear-end crews with electronic End of Train Devices (ETDs) — a change that eliminated one of the most human and storied traditions in railroading. Today a CB&Q NE-12 waycar on the end of a freight train is a memory, making this model a tribute to a vanished way of railroad life.
