These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) 4000 Series "Baldie" in its later life configuration — representing the cars from the first series of 4000 series cars (4001–4250), built by the Cincinnati Car Company in 1914, as they appeared after years of service and modification on the Chicago 'L'. Designed to fit on a Tomytec TM-04/TM-20 motorized chassis.
The nickname "Baldie" refers to the smooth, unadorned roof profile of the 4000 series cars as modified in later years — a visual distinction from the as-built configuration that gives these cars their characteristic late-life appearance and makes them immediately identifiable to Chicago 'L' enthusiasts. The "Baldie" configuration represents the 4000 series as most Chicagoans would have known them through the mid-20th century, after decades of service had shaped their appearance into the familiar form that defined the system's visual identity for a generation of riders.
The 4000 series was one of the most numerous and long-lived car types in Chicago 'L' history. Built by the Cincinnati Car Company beginning in 1914, the cars served the system for decades and proved so durable that the CTA still operates two 4000 series cars from the 1922 batch today for special events and excursions — over a century after the first cars of the series entered service. The late "Baldie" configuration captures these cars at the height of their working lives, in the form that carried generations of Chicago commuters across the city's elevated and subway lines.
