These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) 4000 Series Maintenance-of-Way (MoW) Work Car — representing the 4000 series cars converted from revenue passenger service into general work and maintenance service on the Chicago 'L' system. Designed to fit on a Tomytec TM-04/TM-20 motorized chassis.
The 4000 series cars were built by the Cincinnati Car Company beginning in 1914 and served as the backbone of the Chicago 'L' fleet for decades. Their longevity was remarkable — the CTA still operates two 4000 series cars from the 1922 batch today for special events and excursions, a testament to the durability of the design. As the fleet was gradually replaced by newer equipment, a number of 4000 series cars were retained and converted for non-revenue maintenance-of-way service, performing the essential behind-the-scenes work that keeps a rapid transit system running: hauling track materials, supporting infrastructure maintenance crews, and serving as utility vehicles during off-hours when the revenue service is not operating.
The conversion of retired passenger cars into work equipment was a common and practical approach for transit systems — the robust carbody construction that made the 4000 series reliable in passenger service translated equally well to the demands of maintenance work, and retaining familiar equipment reduced training and parts inventory requirements. MoW work cars like these operated largely out of public view, but they were an indispensable part of the CTA's maintenance operations.
A work car adds operational realism and visual variety to any Chicago 'L' layout, and pairs naturally with the companion Chicago L 4000 Series Rail Grinder "Shhhicago" also available from Out of the Box Models.
