These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago Transit Authority 4000 Series 'L' car — the beloved "Plushies" — cars 4251–4350, built in 1922 by the Cincinnati Car Company and delivered to the Chicago Union Elevated Railroad — a landmark order representing the first steel cars ever operated on the Chicago 'L'. Designed to fit on a Tomytec TM-04/TM-20 mechanism.

The arrival of the 4000 Series marked a pivotal moment in Chicago elevated railroad history. Prior to these cars, the 'L' had operated wooden-bodied equipment — lighter and cheaper to build, but increasingly recognized as a fire and safety hazard as rapid transit systems modernized across the country. The 4251–4350 sub-series were among the first all-steel cars to enter service on the Chicago elevated network, representing a fundamental shift in how the city's transit infrastructure was built and operated. Steel construction meant stronger, safer, longer-lived cars — and the 4000 Series would go on to serve Chicago riders for decades.

The cars earned their affectionate nickname "Plushies" from their plush upholstered seating — a notable luxury compared to the rattan or wooden seats found on other 'L' cars of the era, and a feature that made them immediately popular with Chicago riders. In an age when rapid transit was often a spartan experience, the Plushies offered a touch of comfort that set them apart and endeared them to generations of Chicago commuters.

The cars were delivered to the Chicago Union Elevated Railroad, one of the predecessor companies that operated the 'L' network before the system was reorganized and unified as the Chicago Rapid Transit Company (CRT) in 1924 — just two years after the Plushies entered service. The 4000 Series thus bridges two eras of Chicago transit history, arriving under one corporate identity and continuing their careers under another, eventually passing to the Chicago Transit Authority when the CTA was formed in 1947.

The Plushies represent an era of Chicago transit history that is almost entirely absent from the commercial model railroad market — a rare opportunity to model the Chicago 'L' as it appeared in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when these pioneering steel cars defined the look and feel of elevated railroading in America's second city.
