These are N scale 3D printable files for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) 4000 Series Rail Grinder Work Car S-1 "Shhhicago" — a one-of-a-kind piece of Chicago 'L' history representing a car from the first series of 4000 series cars (4001–4250), built by the Cincinnati Car Company in 1914 and later converted from revenue passenger service into a rail grinding work car, renumbered as Work Car S-1 and given the memorable name "Shhhicago". Designed to fit on a Tomytec TM-04/TM-20 motorized chassis. Available in two decal variants: Shhhicago and Bicentennial.

The 4000 series cars were built by the Cincinnati Car Company beginning in 1914 and represented the backbone of the Chicago 'L' fleet for decades — so numerous and long-lived that they remained in service well into the postwar era, long after the system had begun acquiring newer equipment. The design proved so durable that the CTA still operates two 4000 series cars from the 1922 batch today, preserved and used for special events and excursions — making the 4000 series one of the longest-serving rapid transit car designs in American history, with over a century of presence on the Chicago 'L'.

The conversion of a 4000 series car into a rail grinder — a specialized maintenance vehicle equipped with grinding wheels to resurface and smooth the rail head, reducing noise and extending rail life — was a practical second use for a carbody that had outlived its passenger service career. Rail grinding is an essential but largely invisible part of rapid transit maintenance, and work cars like Shhhicago operated during off-hours to keep the system's track in serviceable condition.

The name "Shhhicago" — a playful pun on the city's name evoking the sound of a rail grinder at work — reflects the CTA's tradition of giving its work equipment distinctive and sometimes whimsical identities, and makes Work Car S-1 one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces of non-revenue equipment in Chicago 'L' history. It is a guaranteed conversation piece on any layout.

The two decal variants capture the car in two distinct appearances:

  • Shhhicago — the car in its Work Car S-1 "Shhhicago" maintenance livery, as it appeared in CTA non-revenue service.
  • Bicentennial — the car in a special Bicentennial livery applied to mark the United States Bicentennial in 1976.
