These are 1/72 scale decals for Convair B-36D Peacemaker 44-92037, assigned to the 42nd Bombardment Wing (Heavy), United States Air Force, circa 1954.
The 42nd Bombardment Wing was a Strategic Air Command unit based at Loring Air Force Base, Maine — one of SAC's northernmost bases, positioned to provide the shortest possible route over the Arctic to Soviet targets. Flying the B-36D at the height of the early Cold War, the 42nd BW was part of America's nuclear deterrent shield, maintaining around-the-clock readiness to deliver atomic weapons deep into the Soviet Union if called upon.
The B-36D was a significant upgrade over the original B-36A and B, adding four General Electric J47 jet engines in paired underwing pods to supplement the six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 radial piston engines — giving rise to the famous “six turning, four burning” description beloved by crews and enthusiasts alike. With intercontinental range, a massive bomb capacity, and the ability to carry nuclear weapons, the Peacemaker was the backbone of SAC's deterrent force until the B-52 arrived in numbers.
A magnificent and imposing subject in 1/72 scale. Please allow some time for decal printing and shipping.
