The 28th Bombardment Wing was a Strategic Air Command unit based at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, and one of SAC's premier heavy reconnaissance and bombardment organizations during the early Cold War. Operating the RB-36H at the height of Cold War tensions, the 28th BW flew some of the most demanding and secretive missions of the era — deep penetration reconnaissance flights probing Soviet air defenses and gathering strategic intelligence across the vast Eurasian landmass.

The RB-36H was the dedicated strategic reconnaissance variant of the Peacemaker, carrying a comprehensive suite of cameras and electronic intelligence equipment in place of part of the bomb load. Retaining the B-36H's full “six turning, four burning” powerplant of six R-4360 radials and four J47 jet engines, the RB-36H had the intercontinental range to reach virtually any target on earth from its SAC bases — making it an unmatched strategic reconnaissance platform until the advent of the U-2.
