These are N scale 3D printable files for the Milwaukee Road (MILW) Fairbanks-Morse Erie-Built A Unit in its Phase 2 configuration, numbered 21A, 21B, 22A, and 22B — the later production batch of Erie-Builts delivered to the Milwaukee Road, representing the external detail evolution from the earlier Phase 1 units. Designed to fit on a Kato PA donor mechanism.
The Fairbanks-Morse Erie-Built was a distinctive cab unit locomotive produced by Fairbanks-Morse in the late 1940s, featuring a wide, rounded nose with a distinctive twin-headlight face that gave the Erie-Built an immediately recognizable appearance quite unlike the more common EMD and Alco cab unit designs of the era. The Milwaukee Road was one of the largest Erie-Built operators in the country, rostering the type in two distinct production phases that differed in external details — making the Phase 1 and Phase 2 units separate and prototype-accurate modeling subjects. The Phase 2 units, numbered 21A, 21B, 22A, and 22B, represent the later delivery batch and are distinguished from the earlier Phase 1 units by their evolved external details.
The Milwaukee Road's Erie-Builts served on the railroad's passenger and freight operations across its network connecting Chicago with the Pacific Northwest and the upper Midwest, including assignments on the railroad's premier Olympian Hiawatha transcontinental service. The Erie-Built's Fairbanks-Morse opposed-piston diesel engine gave the type a distinctive sound and performance profile, though its maintenance demands contributed to a relatively short service career on most railroads.
