Douglas SBD-2 2106 Carrier Qualification Training Unit USS Wolverine IX-64

These are 1/72 scale decals for Douglas SBD-2 Dauntless 2106, assigned to the Carrier Qualification Training Unit (CQTU) aboard USS Wolverine (IX-64), wearing Non-Specular Light Gray (NS Light Gray) upper surfaces over Non-Specular Blue Gray (NS Blue Gray) with modex B-7.

Before it flew training circuits over Lake Michigan, 2106 was a Battle of Midway veteran — shore-based on Midway Atoll with the U.S. Marine Corps' Scout Bombing Squadron VMSB-241 during the pivotal June 1942 battle. VMSB-241 flew some of the most courageous and costly missions of the entire Pacific War, launching repeated attacks against the Japanese fleet with obsolete aircraft and largely without fighter escort. Flying into overwhelming opposition from Zero fighters and intense anti-aircraft fire, the Marines of VMSB-241 pressed their attacks with extraordinary determination — suffering devastating losses but refusing to break off. Their sacrifice, alongside the carrier-based SBDs that sank four Japanese fleet carriers, helped turn the tide of the Pacific War in a single day.

That 2106 survived Midway and went on to train the next generation of naval aviators on Lake Michigan gives this airframe a remarkable two-chapter story — from the most decisive naval battle of the 20th century to the freshwater training grounds that would produce the pilots who finished the war. The two-tone NS Light Gray over NS Blue Gray scheme with post-Pearl Harbor national insignia places it in the 1942–43 training period. Modex B-7 is clearly visible on the fuselage.
