USS Enterprise (CV-6) — the "Big E" — was the most decorated U.S. Navy vessel of World War II, present at nearly every major naval engagement of the Pacific War from Pearl Harbor to the final days of the conflict. The Air Group Commander's aircraft was the tip of the spear for the most storied carrier air wing in American naval history, flying from a ship that earned 20 battle stars — more than any other U.S. vessel in the war. The "COMMANDER ENTERPRISE GROUP" titling on the fuselage identified this aircraft as the personal mount of the officer responsible for leading Enterprise's entire air group into battle.
