These are N scale 3D printable files for the Electro-Motive Corporation EMC E1B — the cabless booster unit of the locomotive family that launched the modern American passenger diesel era, built exclusively for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and found nowhere else on earth. Designed to fit on a Kato E unit frame.

The E1 was the first production E-series passenger locomotive, built in 1937 as EMC's purpose-designed high-speed passenger diesel. The Santa Fe was the sole customer for the entire E1 production run — 8 E1A cab units and 3 E1B booster units, 11 locomotives in total — making every E1 ever built an ATSF locomotive in warbonnet red and silver. No other railroad owned an E1 in any configuration. The E1B booster units were designed to run in multiple-unit consists with the E1A cab units, providing additional horsepower for the Santa Fe's demanding passenger schedules across the desert Southwest without requiring an additional crew cab.

The Santa Fe's E1s were delivered to power the new Super Chief — the all-Pullman, all-streamlined flagship train between Chicago and Los Angeles that became the most glamorous passenger train in America. Running on a 39¾-hour schedule between Chicago and LA, the Super Chief carried Hollywood stars, studio executives, and anyone who wanted to travel between the two cities in the ultimate style. The E1s in their breathtaking red and silver warbonnet livery — one of the most celebrated paint schemes in railroad history — became inseparable from the Super Chief's identity and the golden age of American passenger railroading.

With only 3 E1B units ever built, all for the Santa Fe, this is one of the rarest diesel locomotive types in North American history — and the perfect booster companion to the EMC E1A also available from Out of the Box Models, allowing you to build a complete and prototypically accurate A-B or A-B-A Super Chief consist.
