These are N scale 3D printable files for the EMC E2A — one of only two EMC E2A locomotives ever built, originally delivered to the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) as the lead locomotive of the City of San Francisco and later transferred to the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) where it was repainted in the SP's celebrated Daylight livery. Available in two decal variants: UP 983J and SP 6011. Designed to fit on a Kato E unit donor mechanism.

The EMC E2 was produced by the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) — the predecessor to Electro-Motive Division (EMD) — as one of the earliest streamlined passenger diesel cab units, predating the more numerous E6 and E7 series that would follow. Only two E2A units were ever built, making every model of this type a historically significant subject.

This locomotive was originally delivered to the Union Pacific as UP SF-1 — the "SF" designation directly referencing its assignment as the lead locomotive of the City of San Francisco, the Union Pacific's premier streamliner operating jointly with the Southern Pacific and the Chicago & North Western between Chicago and San Francisco. The locomotive carried a series of numbers across its UP career: renumbered to 901A in 1946, then again to 983J in 1948, before being retired by the UP and transferred to the Southern Pacific Railroad, where it was renumbered SP 6011 and repainted in the SP's iconic Daylight livery — the brilliant red, orange, and black color scheme that became one of the most celebrated passenger train liveries in American railroad history, originally applied to the SP's Daylight streamliners on the Los Angeles–San Francisco Coast Line. The application of the Daylight scheme to this already-rare locomotive — which had begun its career leading the City of San Francisco over the same SP Coast Line territory — gives SP 6011 a uniquely fitting and historically resonant second identity.

The companion E2A — the other of the only two ever built — was transferred to the Chicago & North Western Railway (CNW) after its UP retirement and is represented in the companion EMC E2A – UP / CNW listing from Out of the Box Models.

The two decal variants allow modelers to represent this locomotive in two phases of its career:

  • UP 983J — the locomotive in its final Union Pacific identity as renumbered in 1948, the number it carried until transfer to the SP.
  • SP 6011 — the locomotive after transfer to the Southern Pacific, renumbered 6011 and repainted in the SP's Daylight red, orange, and black livery.

This shell is designed to fit on a Kato E unit donor mechanism. The Fully Painted and Decaled Model option requires a donor mechanism supplied by the customer.
