These are N scale 3D printable files for a complete A-B-B consist of the Electro-Motive Corporation EMC E2A and E2B as modified in 1946, in Union Pacific Railroad markings for two of the most celebrated streamliners in American railroad history. Designed to fit on a Kato E unit frame. Decals are included for either the City of Los Angeles or the City of San Francisco consist.

The E2 was one of the rarest diesel passenger locomotive types ever built in North America — only 2 E2A cab units and 4 E2B booster units were produced in total, making the entire E2 fleet just 6 locomotives, all built for the Union Pacific. This A-B-B set of 3 units therefore represents every E2 ever built as it appeared in 1946 — the complete and total production run of this locomotive type in a single consist. There is no other railroad, no other livery, and no other configuration: if it was an E2 in 1946, it looked like this.

Originally delivered in 1937 to power Union Pacific's new City series streamliners, the E2s were rebuilt and modified by 1946 to reflect the postwar updating of UP's passenger fleet. The 1946 configuration modeled here captures the locomotives as they appeared in their mature service form, wearing the Union Pacific's classic Armour Yellow and gray passenger livery on two of the railroad's flagship routes:

  • City of Los Angeles — UP's premier service between Chicago and Los Angeles, operated jointly with the Chicago & North Western east of Omaha. The City of Los Angeles was one of the most glamorous long-distance trains in America, connecting the Midwest to Hollywood and the Pacific Coast in streamlined luxury across UP's main line through the desert Southwest.
  • City of San Francisco — UP's flagship service to the Bay Area, operated jointly with the Chicago & North Western east of Omaha and the Southern Pacific west of Ogden, Utah, running through the dramatic scenery of the Sierra Nevada and across the salt flats of Utah. The City of San Francisco was one of the longest and most operationally complex streamliners in North America, requiring seamless coordination across three separate railroads for its Chicago-to-Oakland run.

The complete A-B-B consist format — one cab unit leading two cabless boosters — was the standard power arrangement for UP's City series trains, providing the sustained horsepower needed for the long grades and high speeds of the transcontinental route. This set gives you everything needed to model either consist straight out of the box — and in doing so, model the entire E2 locomotive class as it existed in 1946.
