These are N scale 3D printable files for the Electro-Motive Corporation EMC E2A — modeled in both identities of a single remarkable locomotive that served two major railroads across its long career: Union Pacific 984J in late UP markings, and Chicago & North Western 5003A after the same locomotive was transferred and renumbered. Designed to fit on a Kato E unit frame.

The E2 was the second production model in EMC's E-series passenger locomotive lineage, built in 1937 and 1938 as a direct development of the pioneering E1. Powered by a pair of EMC 12-567 prime movers on an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement and designed for the high-speed demands of America's premier streamlined trains, only 2 E2A cab units and 4 E2B booster units were ever built — just 6 locomotives in total — making the E2 one of the rarest diesel passenger locomotive types in North American history and a subject virtually unknown in the commercial model railroad market.

This locomotive began its career on the Union Pacific Railroad, where it worked the railroad's famous City series streamliners across the West wearing the classic Armour Yellow and gray passenger scheme. Numbered 984J in its late UP configuration, it represents the locomotive in its final years of UP service — a prewar machine still at work in the postwar diesel era. The locomotive was subsequently transferred to the Chicago & North Western Railway, where it was renumbered 5003A and put to work on CNW's Midwest passenger services out of Chicago in the railroad's yellow and green livery — a second life for a locomotive that had already outlasted most of its contemporaries.

With only 2 E2A cab units ever built, this model represents one of just two locomotives of its exact type that ever existed. This set gives you both identities of the same locomotive — a rare opportunity to model a specific piece of railroad history in two different chapters of its career, or to run them as a reminder that the same machine wore two very different faces across its working life.

The E2 sits between the pioneering E1 — also available from Out of the Box Models in ATSF warbonnet markings — and the more numerous E3 through E9 series that followed, making it a key link in the chain of development that led to the most successful passenger diesel family in American railroad history.
