EMD GP40X (GP40 prototype)

These are N scale 3D printable files for the EMD GP40X (GP40 Prototype) in EMD demonstrator markings as EMD 433A — the same one-of-a-kind locomotive as the ICG 3075 (also available from Out of the Box Models), but represented here in its original configuration as EMD's own testbed during its active development and demonstration career, before its sale to the Illinois Central Gulf.

This locomotive began its life as a standard EMD GP35, selected by EMD as the platform for developing the technology that would become the GP40. Rebuilt with the new 645 series prime mover and the upgraded traction systems that defined the GP40 generation, it carried the designation GP40X — not to be confused with the entirely different production locomotive that EMD later marketed under the same name. As EMD 433A, this locomotive wore the builder's own colors and represented the cutting edge of EMD's diesel development program in the mid-1960s, serving as a rolling demonstration of the technology that would go on to power hundreds of production GP40s across North America.

The two listings — EMD 433A (this listing) and ICG 3075 — represent the same physical locomotive at two different points in its career: first as EMD's own development and demonstration unit, and later in revenue freight service on the Illinois Central Gulf after its testbed role was complete. Together they tell the complete life story of one of the most historically significant individual locomotives in the EMD diesel catalog.
