These are N scale 3D printable files for the EMD GP40X (GP40 Prototype) in Illinois Central Gulf markings as ICG 3075 — one of the most historically significant and unique single locomotives in American diesel history, and not to be confused with the entirely different production GP40-2 successor that EMD later marketed under the GP40X designation.
This locomotive began its life as a standard EMD GP35, one of EMD's 2,500-horsepower road switchers of the mid-1960s. EMD selected this unit as the testbed and prototype for the GP40, rebuilding it with the new 645 series prime mover and the upgraded systems that would define the GP40 production locomotive. As EMD's rolling laboratory for what became one of its most successful and widely-built locomotive families, this single rebuilt GP35 was the direct ancestor of the hundreds of GP40s that went on to serve railroads across North America — making it one of the most consequential individual locomotives in the EMD diesel lineage.
After completing its role as EMD's development testbed, the locomotive was sold to the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, where it entered revenue service as ICG 3075. The ICG — formed by the 1972 merger of the Illinois Central Railroad and the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad — operated an extensive network across the American Midwest and South, and ICG 3075 worked in regular freight service alongside the railroad's standard production GP40s, its unique prototype origins invisible to all but the most knowledgeable observers.
As a one-of-a-kind locomotive — there was only ever one GP40 prototype, and only one ICG 3075 — this is among the most prototype-specific subjects in the Out of the Box Models catalog, a locomotive that occupies a unique place in EMD history and will be immediately recognized by serious EMD and ICG enthusiasts.
