These are N scale 3D printable files for the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) Fairbanks-Morse Erie-Built A Unit in its Phase 1 configuration — the UP's early FM Erie-Built locomotives as originally delivered, numbered 50-M-1A and 50-M-2A (later renumbered 981A and 982A, and subsequently 700 and 701). Designed to fit on a Kato PA donor mechanism.
The Fairbanks-Morse Erie-Built was a distinctive cab unit locomotive produced by Fairbanks-Morse in the late 1940s, featuring the same carbody design as the General Electric Erie-Built — a wide, rounded nose with a distinctive twin-headlight face that gave the Erie-Built its immediately recognizable appearance, quite unlike the more common EMD and Alco cab unit designs of the era. The Union Pacific was among the railroads that rostered these unusual locomotives, and the UP's examples are particularly notable for their early truck frames unique to the Union Pacific — a prototype-specific underframe detail that distinguishes the UP Phase 1 Erie-Builts from later examples and from Erie-Builts operated by other railroads. These early UP truck frames are accurately represented in this model, making it the correct choice for modelers building a prototype-accurate UP Erie-Built consist.
The UP renumbered these locomotives multiple times during their service career — from the original 50-M-1A / 50-M-2A delivery numbers through 981A / 982A and finally 700 / 701 — providing modelers with multiple era options using the included decals.
This shell is designed to fit on a Kato PA donor mechanism. The Fully Painted and Decaled Model option requires a donor mechanism supplied by the customer.
