These are N scale 3D printable files for the Fairbanks-Morse Erie Built A Unit in New York Central Railroad passenger markings, representing units 4400–4405 — the NYC's six passenger-equipped Erie Builts. Designed to fit on a Kato PA frame.
The Erie Built was Fairbanks-Morse's entry into the postwar passenger locomotive market, produced between 1945 and 1949 in partnership with General Electric at GE's Erie, Pennsylvania plant — giving the locomotive its name. Powered by FM's distinctive opposed-piston engine — in which two pistons share a single cylinder moving in opposite directions, eliminating the cylinder head and delivering exceptional power density — the Erie Built was one of the most visually striking passenger locomotives of the postwar era, with its bold "shark nose" carbody design that set it apart from the more conventional EMD E and F units dominating the passenger locomotive market.
The New York Central Railroad was one of America's greatest passenger railroads, operating the legendary Water Level Route between New York City and Chicago and a vast network of passenger services across the northeastern and midwestern United States. The NYC's six Erie Builts, numbered 4400–4405, were equipped with steam generators for passenger car heating, making them fully capable of working the railroad's premier passenger trains. In the NYC's elegant two-tone gray passenger livery with the iconic cigar band herald, the Erie Builts cut a dramatic figure at the head of Central passenger consists — a striking alternative to the EMD E7s and E8s that dominated the NYC's passenger fleet.
The Erie Built's opposed-piston engine, while powerful, proved more maintenance-intensive than EMD's proven 567 series, and the type had a relatively short career on most roads. The NYC's units represent the Erie Built in one of its most prestigious assignments — passenger service on one of America's most celebrated railroads.
