These are 1/72 scale decals for the Junkers Ju 322 Mamut (Mammoth) V1, operated by the Luftwaffe, wearing overall Sandgelb (RLM 79) with standard Luftwaffe cross markings, swastika tail insignia, and fuselage code VI.
The Ju 322 Mamut was one of the most spectacular failures in aviation history — and one of the most fascinating. Designed in 1940 as a massive all-wood heavy assault glider to carry a Panzer IV tank or equivalent payload for Operation Sea Lion, the Ju 322 was built almost entirely from non-strategic timber to conserve aluminum. The result was an enormous flying wing of breathtaking ambition and catastrophic instability. On its first flight, the V1 prototype proved so dangerously uncontrollable that the tow aircraft crew nearly lost their lives, the tank load had to be jettisoned immediately after takeoff, and the aircraft barely survived to land. The entire program — 98 aircraft in various stages of construction — was cancelled on the spot, and the completed airframes were broken up for firewood.
That only two prototypes ever flew, and that the program was terminated after a single disastrous test flight, makes the Ju 322 Mamut one of the rarest and most obscure subjects in all of WWII aviation. The Sandgelb (RLM 79) overall finish and Luftwaffe markings of the V1 represent the aircraft exactly as it appeared on that single, near-fatal flight. Includes two cross size options and swastika markings.
An essential subject for any Luftwaffe prototype, WWII German aviation, or "what went wrong" collection. Please allow some time for decal printing and shipping.
