The Pullman "Creek" Series Skytop Sleeper-Observation was originally built by the Pullman Company for the Milwaukee Road in 1948–1949, designed by Brooks Stevens for service on the Olympian Hiawatha. The car's iconic Skytop lounge — a sweeping, fully glazed rounded observation end with a dramatically raked glass roof — made it one of the most visually celebrated passenger car designs of the streamliner era. After their Milwaukee Road service, a number of the "Creek" Series cars were acquired by Canadian National Railway, which rebuilt them and renumbered them into the 1900–1905 series for service in the CN passenger fleet.

The CN rebuild represents a significant second chapter for these cars — the Skytop's distinctive observation end, which had made the cars famous on the Olympian Hiawatha, was retained through the CN rebuild, preserving the car's most architecturally striking feature while adapting the cars to CN's operational requirements and livery.
