These are N scale 3D printable files for the American Locomotive Company (ALCo) DL-108 and DL-110 booster units — the cabless companions to the legendary DL-107 and DL-109 cab locomotives, and among the rarest diesel passenger units ever to operate in North America. Designed to fit on an Atlas DL-109 frame.

The DL-107, DL-108, DL-109, and DL-110 were ALCo's entries into the prewar and wartime passenger diesel market, produced between 1940 and 1945 as high-speed passenger locomotives powered by ALCo's 12-539 prime mover. The DL-107 and DL-109 were the cab (A) units; the DL-108 and DL-110 were their cabless booster (B) counterparts, designed to run in multiple-unit consists to provide additional horsepower without an extra crew. The entire DL-10x family was produced in very small numbers, making each individual unit a historically significant locomotive.

The production table for the booster units tells the story of their rarity clearly — only 4 booster units were ever built across the entire DL-108 and DL-110 production run, spread across just three railroads:

  • ATSF DL-108 — Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, No. 50A: The Santa Fe took delivery of a single DL-108 booster — just one unit — to run with its DL-107 cab locomotives on premier passenger service across the Southwest in the iconic red and silver warbonnet livery. Unit 50A is one of the most historically significant single diesel booster units in American railroad history.
  • SOU DL-110 — Southern Railway, No. 2954: The Southern Railway's sole DL-110 booster ran with its DL-109 cab units on passenger service across the Southeast, wearing the Southern's classic green and gold passenger livery. With only one DL-110 built for the Southern, No. 2954 is the only example of its exact type that ever existed.

The Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific Railway — a Southern Railway subsidiary — also operated two DL-108 boosters (Nos. 6425 and 6426), rounding out the complete production run of just 4 booster units across the entire DL-108/DL-110 family.

These booster units are the perfect companions to the ALCo DL-107 and DL-109 cab units also available from Out of the Box Models, allowing you to build complete and prototypically accurate A-B passenger consists as these railroads operated them.
