These are N scale 3D printable files for the Budd Big Dome — one of the most spectacular and recognizable passenger cars ever built in North America, originally constructed for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway as cars 506–513. Available in three liveries spanning the full arc of these cars' remarkable service lives.
The Budd Big Dome — officially the "Hi-Level Dome" in Santa Fe parlance — was built by the Budd Company in 1954 as the centerpiece of the Santa Fe's re-equipped Super Chief and El Capitan consists. Unlike the mid-train dome cars offered by other railroads, the Big Dome featured a full-length upper-level glass dome extending nearly the entire length of the car, giving passengers an unobstructed panoramic view of the desert Southwest, the Raton Pass, and the dramatic scenery along the Santa Fe's Chicago-to-Los Angeles main line. The eight cars — numbered 506 through 513 — were delivered in Budd's signature unpainted stainless steel, gleaming alongside the red and silver warbonnet locomotives that hauled them, and were among the most prized pieces of equipment in the Santa Fe's passenger fleet.
After the decline of long-distance passenger service in the late 1960s and the formation of AMTK in 1971, the Big Domes dispersed to new owners and new lives, making their way onto excursion trains, tourist railroads, and private operators across North America. This set captures three distinct chapters in their history:
- ATSF 506–513 — the cars as originally delivered to the Santa Fe in unpainted stainless steel, the Budd Company's hallmark finish that gave the Big Domes their distinctive gleaming appearance on the Super Chief and El Capitan. Clean, timeless, and unmistakably Santa Fe.
- MH 509 and 513 — Mount Hood Railroad: Two of the original Santa Fe Big Domes found a second life with the Mount Hood Railroad in Hood River, Oregon, operating excursion service through the spectacular scenery of the Columbia River Gorge and the orchards of the Hood River Valley in the shadow of Mount Hood. A dramatic contrast to their desert Southwest origins.
- SW 523 "Donner Pass" — Sierra Western Railroad: A fictional excursion livery inspired by the legendary Donner Pass route through the Sierra Nevada, evoking the golden age of California mountain railroading. The "Donner Pass" name and Sierra Western markings make this a perfect freelance or layout-specific option for modelers of California prototype or fictional western railroads.
