A Folsom Locomotive Works product, fulfilled directly by Folsom Locomotive Works — an exceptional N scale 3D printed model of the Southern Pacific B-50-16 Wood Sheathed 40’ Boxcar, built in 1927 and representing the SP's heavyweight wooden boxcar construction at its most refined. Available in four decal variants spanning the Southern Pacific family of railroads: SP, SP Express Service, T&NO, and SD&AE.

The B-50-16 was built in 1927 as a wood-sheathed boxcar — a construction method in which a steel underframe and structural members were clad in wooden exterior sheathing, combining the strength of steel framing with the traditional wooden car body that had defined American freight car construction for decades. By 1927 the industry was rapidly transitioning toward all-steel construction, making the B-50-16 a late and refined example of the wood-sheathed era — a contrast to the B-50-15 (also available from Out of the Box Models), which began as a wooden car and was later rebuilt with steel sheathing. Together the two sub-classes illustrate the SP's evolving approach to boxcar construction and modernization across the same era.

The four decal options reflect the Southern Pacific's family of subsidiary and affiliated railroads, all of which operated equipment to common SP standards across the system:

  • SP — standard Southern Pacific freight service markings, representing the car in general revenue service across the SP's vast network from Portland and San Francisco to New Orleans and El Paso.
  • SP Express Service — the car assigned to express freight service in passenger train head-end consists, carrying high-priority shipments on passenger train schedules across the SP system.
  • T&NO (Texas & New Orleans Railroad) — the SP's primary subsidiary in Texas and Louisiana, operating the railroad's lines east of El Paso through Houston and New Orleans, fully integrated into the SP system but maintaining its own corporate identity and car lettering.
  • SD&AE (San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway) — the SP's subsidiary connecting San Diego with the SP main line at El Centro through the rugged terrain of the Carrizo Gorge, one of the most spectacular and challenging railroad construction projects in California history.
