SP F-50-5 Flatcar

A Folsom Locomotive Works product, fulfilled directly by Folsom Locomotive Works — an exceptional N scale 3D printed model of the Southern Pacific F-50-5 Steel 40' Flatcar.

The F-50-5 is one of the earliest sub-classes in the Southern Pacific's long-running family of standard 50-ton capacity flatcars — the F-50 series — representing the foundational design from which later sub-classes such as the F-50-8, F-50-9, F-50-10, and F-50-12 were developed and refined over the following decades. As one of the earlier iterations in the series, the F-50-5 carries the prototype details and construction characteristics of its era, making it a distinctly different and historically significant model from its later siblings — and an essential piece for the modeler building a complete and chronologically accurate SP freight fleet.

The 40-foot steel flatcar was a workhorse of American railroading in the mid-20th century, handling an enormous variety of loads including lumber, pipe, machinery, military equipment, and — fitted with removable racks such as the Blackburn Beet Rack (also available from Out of the Box Models) — seasonal agricultural commodities like sugar beets from California's fertile valleys. The Southern Pacific operated one of the largest flatcar fleets in North America, reflecting the diverse industrial and agricultural economy of its territory stretching from Portland and San Francisco to New Orleans and El Paso. The F-50 series, from the early F-50-5 through to the later sub-classes, was the backbone of that fleet for generations.
