A Folsom Locomotive Works product, fulfilled directly by Folsom Locomotive Works — an exceptional N scale 3D printed model of the Southern Pacific F-50-8 Steel 40' Flatcar, available in both SP (Southern Pacific) and PE (Pacific Electric) decal options.
The F-50-8 is one of the earlier sub-classes within the Southern Pacific's extensive family of standard 50-ton capacity flatcars — the F-50 series — which encompassed numerous design iterations built over several decades. Each sub-class in the F-50 family — the F-50-8, F-50-9, F-50-10, F-50-12, and others — represents a specific design generation with its own prototype details, deck configuration, and construction features, making each a distinct and prototypically significant model for the serious SP modeler.
The inclusion of a Pacific Electric decal option reflects the close corporate relationship between the two railroads — the Pacific Electric Railway was a Southern Pacific subsidiary that operated the famous Red Car interurban electric network across the Los Angeles Basin, at its peak the largest electric railway system in the world. While the PE is best known for its passenger operations, it also handled significant freight traffic across its sprawling network, and SP-family flatcar equipment operating under PE markings represents a prototypically accurate and historically fascinating modeling option for Southern California layouts.
The 40-foot steel flatcar was a workhorse of American railroading in the mid-20th century, handling an enormous variety of loads including lumber, pipe, machinery, military equipment, and — fitted with removable racks such as the Blackburn Beet Rack (also available from Out of the Box Models) — seasonal agricultural commodities like sugar beets from California's fertile valleys.
