These are 1/72 scale decals for the Vought F4U-1 Corsair, BuNo 03821, assigned to Operational Training Unit VF-4, United States Navy — a rare and visually striking example of the early "birdcage" Corsair finished in overall Gloss Deep Sea Blue, one of the few F4U-1s known to have worn this scheme.
The F4U-1 is instantly recognizable by its original "birdcage" canopy — a multi-framed, heavily braced greenhouse enclosure that severely limited pilot visibility and was one of the primary reasons the early Corsair was initially rejected for carrier operations. Combined with a long nose that obscured the pilot's forward view on approach and difficult landing characteristics, the birdcage F4U-1 was handed to the Marines for land-based operations while the Navy worked to resolve its carrier suitability issues. The later bubble canopy of the F4U-4 would transform the pilot's situational awareness, but the birdcage Corsair remains one of the most distinctive and characterful profiles in wartime aviation.
The overall Gloss Deep Sea Blue finish — a rich, dark navy blue applied uniformly across the entire airframe — was introduced by the U.S. Navy in 1944 as the standard camouflage scheme for carrier-based aircraft, replacing the earlier tri-color scheme of sea blue, intermediate blue, and white. Finding it on an F4U-1 birdcage Corsair is unusual, making BuNo 03821 a genuinely rare and eye-catching modeling subject. Assigned to Operational Training Unit VF-4, this aircraft was part of the Navy's pipeline for producing combat-ready Corsair pilots during the critical mid-war period.
A rare and visually distinctive variant combining the iconic birdcage profile with one of the most handsome paint schemes of the Pacific War. Please allow some time for decal printing and shipping.
